The biopsychosocial model was first proposed by Engel GE and Romano R in 1977. As opposed to the biomedical approach, Engel strived for a more complete approach by recognizing that each patient has their own thoughts, feelings, and history; he framed this model for both illnesses and psychological problems. The biopsychosocial model applies to us all. The biopsychosocial model is great for helping us understand how mental health conditions might develop. However, we shouldn’t only think of it as being useful for people who are not mentally well. It applies to us all.

They created it in an effort to develop a framework that addressed how the interactions between our biology, psychology, and social traits can influence and determine the cause, possible manifestation, and various outcomes of either wellness or disease. The biopsychosocial model is not the only alternative to the biomedical model; there is a social model, 15 and there are many others, 16 some better developed than others.
