Faecal calprotectin is primarily used to provide an indication of which patients require follow up studies such as colonoscopy. Fecal calprotectin levels of patients with inflammatory bowel disease are much higher than those of healthy controls or patients with functional disorders or other gastrointestinal diseases. Actim ® Calprotectin is a rapid immunological dipstick test that is based on highly specific monoclonal antibodies detecting fecal calprotectin. The test kit contains all necessary materials for home sampling, and the one-step test protocol requires only 15 seconds of hands-on time.

The objective was to investigate the utility of fecal S100A12, in comparison to fecal calprotectin and standard Fecal Calprotectin will help evaluate the level of intestinal inflammation and will differentiate between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Elevated concentrations of fecal calprotectin may be useful in distinguishing IBD from functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as IBS. Elevated concentrations of fecal calprotectin may be useful in distinguishing IBD from functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). When used for this differential diagnosis, fecal calprotectin has sensitivity and specificity both of approximately 85%.

Faecal Calprotectin levels predict colorectal inflammation among patients with chronic diarrheoa referred for colonoscopy.

The concentration of calprotectin in stool reflects the number of PMNs migrating into the gut lumen. Calprotectin is a calcium- and zinc-binding protein produced by PMNs, monocytes, and squamous epithelial cells, except those in normal skin. After binding calcium, it can resist degradation by leukocytic and bacterial enzymes. Fecal Calprotectin testing can provide an accurate diagnosis in many patients with chronic diarrhea without the need of doing invasive diagnostic procedures.
